Job Description

Summary:  The Category Manager works closely with the sales and marketing departments and is responsible for retailer sales growth in the book category, specifically for the balance between sales, efficiency and presentation.  

 

Essential Functions:  To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Provide customer specific, corporate and industry projections, sales and trend information for both regular and issue specific ad hoc reporting needs.
  • Prepare comprehensive and accurate reports on a timely basis.
  • Present complex ideas in a clear and concise manner to both internal and external parties.
  • Communicate effectively with internal departments, vendors, and customer in order to gather information, provide status updates and present requested information.
  • Participate in industry and customer supported group meetings, seminars, trade shows and committees.
  • Contribute to and participate in the presentation of the Weekly Business Review.
  • Participate in retailer product review and planning meetings.
  • Prepare and present COE presentations reviewing previous seasonal and promotional events.
  • Review marketing plans to identify potential inefficiencies or distribution gaps.
  • Prepare monthly, seasonal and event projections based upon trends and past performance.

 

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Other duties may be assigned, directed or requested.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Mathematics or related discipline.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to analyze data, understand trends, draw conclusions and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Fast learner, team player, and aggressive problem solver.
  • Strong to advanced level of skills with MS Office.
  • Proficient in WebFocus and/or SQL and familiarity with enterprise reporting and analysis tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – in person, phone, email, presentations, etc.

  • Must be able to sit for 5 hours per day
  • Will frequently have repetitive hand/arm movements for simple reaching and/or typing
  • Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • Regularly required to stand; use hands and fingers, and handle or feel objects

 

Language Skills:

  • Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to speak with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as instructions and procedure manuals
  • Ability to create and write reports

 

Mathematical Skills:

  • Must be proficient in mathematics
  • Ability to add and subtract numbers and to multiply and divide
  • Ability to do statistical analysis

 

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving variables
