Job Description

Summary:  Responsible for creating outstanding products for ReaderLink Marketing Services. This role conceptualizes new product ideas and packaging formats, creates mockups and product concepts, manages project style guides, works with editorial to execute design and layout, and manages vendors and contractors as necessary to keep assigned projects on schedule. The designer will work with both proprietary brands and licensed properties for global distribution including but not limited to Disney, Marvel, Lucas, Hasbro, Warner Bros, and Guinness.


Essential Functions:  To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:



  • Participate in brainstorming and developing creative projects. Create layouts and sketches to use as visual aids, and communicate these ideas to the internal team and/or packagers
  • Participate in format development with Publisher and Developmental Editor. Create mockups and visual concepts for assigned projects for sales department or customers
  • Operate as lead designer and layout artist on assigned projects to create beautiful, innovative, and cohesive book and book plus products. Work ranges from complete concepts to single covers, interiors, and packaging
  • Maintain expertise in Adobe Creative Suite – Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat
  • Manage the non-paper component design of formats
  • Manipulate brand provided art to fit formats
  • Establish creative schedules and budgets with supervisor
  • Hire designers or illustrators to complete work as needed. Collaborate with and/or manage freelancers for assigned jobs
  • Manage freelancer and personal work-flow, ensuring key dates of the production schedule are being met
  • Consistently apply and enforce style and brand guidelines. Develop guidelines as necessary
  • Audit freelance design and illustration invoices on assigned projects


Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversee vendors, such as designers, artists, illustrators, photo researches, paper engineers, etc.


Non-Essential Functions:

Job Requirements


  • Formal design education, training or experience required
  • Minimum of 5 years of graphic design experience, in book, book plus or consumer product development
  • Experience designing books for teen to adult market is preferred
  • Ability to manage multiple projects (10+) at any given time
  • Knowledge of principles of design including: layout, typography, color, balance, composition and current design trends
  • Able to work under stress in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment
  • Must be able to take direction, as well as to conceptualize, design and organize projects on your own when needed
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite – Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  • Excellent organizational skills, must be detail oriented and well organized
  • Strong problem solving, communication and negotiation skills


Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally must lift/move up to 10 pounds
  • Specific vision requirements include close vision in order to view PC/CRT and written documents/reports
