Job Description

Summary:  Responsible for the development of originated Thunder Bay Press product.  Work closely with Thunder Bay Press team to conceptualize product that will work in all channels.  Plan and oversee all aspects of the book development process from idea to execution.


Essential Functions:  To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:


  • Oversee and assist in the development, planning and execution of Thunder Bay Press product (approximately 30-45 titles per year)
  • Maintain overall editorial schedule and ensure all key customer account deadlines are met, as well as catalog ship and publisher dates
  • Direct all stages of product development for originated titles, including the creation of project briefs, hiring and communicating with freelancers, and reviewing and routing manuscripts, dummies, components, and designed pages
  • Manage editorial, and freelance talent during all phases of development and troubleshoot any related issues
  • Ensure all titles meet Thunder Bay Press’s standard of quality and artistic excellence
  • Responsible for the accuracy of all information related to packaged and originated titles in database
  • Proofread and approve book cover copy and catalog copy, write and proofread all sales tip sheets and marketing materials
  • Oversee development of licensed titles, coordinate with various licenses to acquire assets, build schedules and complete all required approval processes
  • Responsible for setting weekly creative meetings, generating new ideas, and prioritizing projects
  • Assist in the creation of mock ups and sales materials to secure customer commitments
  • Attend weekly production and communicate the status of each title related to the schedule, changes to format, and art or design concerns
  • Manage WIP and royalty processes and all budgets for editorial expenses
  • Work with authors and agents to secure permissions, releases, and endorsements to obtain approval for text, design, copy editing, cover design, and cover text
  • Provide digi-ready manuscripts to other departments, such as marketing and foreign rights
  • Repurpose available Thunder Bay Press owned materials to create new product
  • Manage Project Editor of Thunder Bay Press

Job Requirements


  • Candidate will possess four to five years of editorial experience in a publishing house, with a preferred candidate having five to 10 years
  • BA in English, Journalism, or a related field
  • Ability to develop, track, and meet budgets and editorial schedules
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to effectively direct writers, illustrators, and designers
  •  Superior editorial and copyediting skills and a working knowledge of the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite—InDesign, Photoshop, etc.
  • Creativity, and an ability to approach issues from all sides in order to creatively problem solve
  • Keen attention to detail

Language Skills:

  • Excellent communication and writing skills. Familiarity with publishing industry terms helpful. Should be able to draft reports and correspondence
  • Strong project management skills; ability to identify and assess issues and make decisions in a timely manner
  • Interpersonal skills – the individual maintains confidentiality, remains open to others’ ideas and exhibits willingness to try new things

Mathematical Skills:

  • Intermediate math skills
  • PC and MAC literate (Word, Excel, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Light HTML & CSS understanding useful

Reasoning Ability:

  • Must be a strategic thinker
  • Must possess analytical abilities
  • Must be energetic and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines
  • Problem solving – the individual identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes information skillfully and can offer out of the box solutions

Physical Requirements:

  • Work could be performed while sitting, standing or walking
  • Work performed will entail fine manipulation of hands and/or fingers, as well as repetitive hand action. It will additionally entail bending, twisting, squatting and climbing, as well as upper and lower body mobility
