Job Description

Summary: The Editorial Director will oversee list management, content from Licensors, share responsibility for achieving sales, profit, and return on investment goals; and supervise editorial staff. The position demands sound, independent judgement skills while managing the editorial processes for the publishing lists and ensuring that excellent standards are met.


Essential Functions: To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:



  • Develop publication lists for Studio Fun, including approval of titles by Licensors and scheduling titles.
  • Edit titles while managing editorial staff assigned to other titles.
  • Work closely with Publisher and Silver Dolphin Editorial Director in managing day-to-day operations.
  • Supervise editorial staff and provide guidance on contract negotiation and creating and maintaining productive relationships with Licensors, authors, the design team, marketing and co-workers.
  • Develop most titles from scratch, helping to develop new formats and research new licenses.
  • Assist in developing marketing plans for new titles, in collaboration with Publisher and Editors.
  • Represent division at tradeshows and industry events.
  • Develop strong relationships with major Licensors.
  • Manage day-to-day workflow and supervises the development of projects from concept up to the final published work.
  • Report on status of projects for the group.
  • Deliver files to the printer on time and on budget.


Financial Management

  • Negotiate and oversee all contracts with editors and vendors.
  • Direct editors on managing individual book budgets.
  • Manage author and freelance editorial costs spent on all projects.
  • Coordination for budget, forecasts, and strategic planning. Work with Publisher to make comparisons to previous year.
  • Manage and control royalty advances and plant costs in accordance with strategic plans and individual projects.


Coordination and Communication

  • Provide information and schedules for catalogs, decks, fact sheets, selling materials, etc.
  • Communicate gaps created by release date changes, material due dates, and business needs to appropriate units.
  • Coordinate the Bologna and Frankfurt catalogs. Gather titles to be included in global catalogs, ensuring all are accurate.
  • Present lists at sales meetings, to customers, and to executive management.

 Non-Essential Functions:

  •  Other duties may be assigned, directed or requested.

Language Skills:


  • Excellent communication and writing skills. Familiarity with publishing industry terms helpful. Should be able to draft reports and correspondence.
  • Strong project management skills; ability to identify and assess issues and make decisions in a timely manner.

  • Interpersonal skills – the individual maintains confidentiality, remains open to others’ ideas and exhibits willingness to try new things.

  •  Office environment
  • Periodic attendance at trade shows/conferences
  • Constantly interacting with customers, authors, licensors, in-house departments, and internal co-workers, managers, and supervisors

Job Requirements


  •  College or University degree required.
  • 8-10 years of publishing experience, including acquiring and editing.
  • Knowledge of book publishing processes and functions – Editorial, Managing Editorial, Production, Design, and Copyediting.
  • High degree of organizational skills needed.

Physical Requirements:

  •  May be required to move and lift heavy boxes of books/catalogs or marketing collateral occasionally
