Job Description

Summary:  Responsible for managing assigned originated or acquired books for Portable Press, part of the Printers Row Publishing Group. Plan and oversee all aspects of the book development process from idea to execution for assigned titles/series.

 

Essential Functions:  To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Assist in the development, planning, and execution of Portable Press books.
  • Work with the Developmental Editor to present concepts, manage editorial budgets, and build schedules.
  • Assist in all stages of product development, including creating project briefs, hiring and communicating with freelancers, and reviewing and routing manuscripts, dummies, components, and designed pages.
  • Assist in the development of licensed titles, coordinate with various licenses to acquire assets, build schedules, and complete all required approval processes in an organized and timely manner.
  • Attend weekly production meetings and communicate the status of each title related to the schedule, changes to format, and art or design concerns.
  • Communicate with production, design, editorial, and freelance talent during all phases of development and troubleshoot any related issues.
  • Actively participate in weekly creative meetings to generate new ideas based on market research. Assist in idea development and execution of new products as well as refreshing Portable Press backlist.
  • Create product presentations and mock ups and sales materials to secure customer commitments
  • Responsible for the accuracy of all information of managed projects in database.
  • Provide sales and marketing department title information, copy, covers and interiors for bi-annual catalog.
  • Write and proofread book cover copy, catalog copy, sales tip sheets and marketing materials.
  • Ensure all titles meet the Portable Press standard of quality and artistic excellence.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Other duties may be assigned, directed or requested.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Candidate will possess 4-5 years of editorial experience in a publishing house, with a preferred candidate having 5-10 years.
  • BA in English, Journalism, or a related field
  • Ability to develop, track, and meet budgets and editorial schedules.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to effectively direct writers, illustrators, and designers.
  •  Superior editorial and copyediting skills and a working knowledge of the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Possess the skills to perform internet research and a working knowledge of MS Office software. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • Creativity, and an ability to approach issues from all sides in order to creatively problem-solve.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Editorial experience with children’s books or novelty books. Previous authorship of children’s books is a plus.

 

Language Skills:

  • Excellent communication and writing skills. Familiarity with publishing industry terms helpful. Should be able to draft reports and correspondence.
  • Strong project management skills; ability to identify and assess issues and make decisions in a timely manner.
  • Interpersonal skills – the individual maintains confidentiality, remains open to others’ ideas and exhibits willingness to try new things.

 

Mathematical Skills:

  • Intermediate math skills
  • PC and MAC literate (Word, Excel, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Light HTML & CSS understanding useful

 

Reasoning Ability:

  • Must be a strategic thinker.
  • Must possess analytical abilities.
  • Must be energetic and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Problem solving – the individual identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes information skillfully and can offer out of the box solutions.

  • Constantly interacting with customers, vendors, licensors, in-house departments, and internal co-workers, managers, and supervisors
